My brother has a BX22 that has nearly 400hrs on it. During a recent visit, I noticed that the band that holds the air cleaner in place had broken and mentioned it to him. He replaced it, and it broke again. This time he mentioned that it had been idling rough. So, I started it up and noticed that it is indeed idling rough (presumed cause of metal fatigue in bracket), but runs smoothly at high rpm. I also noticed a lot of black smoke when running the engine up. Questions: is the broken bracket a result of rough running engine? Also, will diesel fuel injector cleaner clean up the rough idle, or is it more serious than that (need to take it to the shop for tune-up?)

Thanks in advance.

The broken bracket is a very common problem and is caused by the rough idle.... something this engine just has.

I did a little grinding on the air cleaner mounting bracket and reattached the air cleaner housing with a big hose clamp. That solved the problem.

As to the fuel additive.... absolutely! I use it with every tankful.

It probably wouldn't hurt to buy a couple quarts of Mobil 1 and change the oil. It will idle easier and faster with a good diesel rated synthetic and the engine internals will stay much cleaner. ....

Yup. If you have to have odd, 5 is better than 3. ....

I can't figure it out. My wife was begging me to get her a Volvo V70XC awd wagon. I finally gave in and bought one last week at the auction.(i wholesale cars) This thing has an inline 5 cyl and it runs a smooth and my swiss army watch. I would think with the od number of cyls it would have to run rough on idle. I love this car. I am far from a yuppie but what a nice car and built like a tank!

Go figure!!??!! ....

These days, when it's so relatively easy to manufacture cranks with offset rod end journals, I'm not sure whey any cylinder configuration should run real rough. More cylinders should always be smoother though. ....

Tell me about it. The inline 2-cyl in the BX1500 will shake your brains out at idle (I too had the air cleaner band break at under 100 hours). However, at just a touch above idle it purrs like a kitten. I usually keep it at about 1/8 throttle if idling. ....

I wonder if the high-vibration engines have higher compression. My 7610 has a really smooth idle in comparison. The only thing that rattles at all is the loader control during idle. Anyways, thanks for the feedback--I'll let him know. ....

Maybe so... I know both of my Yanmar 3 bangers have been smooth idlers.

I also noticed that Kubota sets the idle rpm on the RTV at 1400. Same basic engine as the BX23 etc. ....

If the engine is fine other than idle and not missing at idle, bump the idle up just alittle and it will smooth out some spepcaily on the bx1500. ....
